Lancers plaster the Jets

COLONY-It was all Lancers on the Crest High basketball court as the boys’ basketball team dominated Friday night in a route of the Jets of Altoona-Midway High, 73-47.
A fast start put the Lancers up big early and they closed out the first quarter with a 25-5 lead. Not letting up, Crest continued to pour it on, scoring 22 unanswered points into the early second quarter.
Crest coach Travis Hermreck said pressure defense and an ability to harvest steals propelled the offensive explosion.
“There was another stretch there in the second quarter when we went on a 19-0 run,” he said. “We created a lot of our offense through steals. We moved the ball real well and ran the floor real well and got a lot of transition buckets.”
Still, the Jets showed signs of life in the third period. Down 46-10 to open the second half, Altoona-Midway tried to battle back. The visitors forced 15 points in the third period, tripling their single-period scoring production.
“We started looking for cheap steals and that got us out of position,” Hermreck said of the third-period surge by the Jets.
But Crest’s offense was too much and was still able to outscore the Jets in the period 19-15, putting the Lancers up 65-25 as the teams headed into the final period of action.
With a running clock and the Lancer backups in, the Jets were able to make the score look a little less lopsided, outscoring Crest 22-8 in the fourth period.
In the win, which pushed Crest’s season record to 5-2, Kyle Hammond once again led the Lancers with a 21 points and a game-high eight rebounds. Jordan Morton had 16 points, six rebounds, five steals and six assists for Crest as well.
Caleb DeNoon led the Jets with a game-high 24 points.
