Fillies’ JV wins one of three in tourney

Iola High’s Fillies claimed a victory in their final game of the Fort Scott High Junior Varsity Tournament Saturday. The tournament was hosted by Iola High for games Thursday and Saturday.
The Fillies’ junior varsity started out slow, losing 8-6 to Chanute Thursday night, then had good games Saturday at Iola Middle School.
Iola lost 49-38 to Parsons Saturday morning then, playing the last game of the day, the Fillies defeated Fort Scott 33-27.
“Since day one, we’ve seen improvement by these girls,” said Mark Percy, Iola High assistant coach. “After the first game, the girls started picking up confidence on the court.”
In the victory over Fort Scott, the Fillies were down 6-5 after one but turned the tables on the Tigers for an 11-11 halftime score. Iola outscored Fort Scott 9-6 in the third period and battled for the win on a 13-10 run in the final quarter.
Reagan Ford led the Fillies with 11 points and Katie Thompson added eight. Lexie Long and Emma Sigg scored four points each and Emery Driskel put in three. Addie Haar scored two points and Emma Piazza had one point.
Fort Scott got 15 points from Ericah Shoemaker.
Earlier on Saturday, Parsons built a 36-19 lead by intermission and was up 45-22 after three quarters. Iola outscored Parsons 16-4 in the fourth period.
The Fillies had 12 players score. Driskel paced the Fillies with six points and Darci Collins had five points. Scoring four points each were Sigg, Haar and Karlie Lower.
Long and Thompson scored three points each. Ford, Paige Miller and Jo Lohman scored two points apiece and Emmalee Seabolt added one point.
The leading scorer for Parsons was Kenya Kelly with 20 points.
On Thursday, the Fillies were held scoreless for three quarters but came close to winning the game against Chanute. Iola was down 7-0 at halftime then scored six points in the fourth quarter to lose 8-6.
Driskel and Lohman had two points each for Iola. Sigg and Haar each scored one point.
“We have a lot of room to improve but the girls played with great hustle in all three games,” Percy said.
