BURLINGTON — Inside, outside or anywhere in between, it didn’t seem to matter where Iola High’s girls shot the ball Tuesday evening.
Nothing was falling.
The Fillies were ice cold from the field, hitting only eight field goals in a 49-22 loss to host Burlington in the Wildcats’ midseason tournament.
The loss snaps a three-game winning streak for the Fillies (5-5), who now take on Labette County, a 54-36 loser to top seed Santa Fe Trail. Semifinals are at 6:40 p.m. Friday at the Burlington Middle School gymnasium. A final round contest is Saturday against either Rossville or Northfield.
“We had some great looks at the basket,” Iola head coach Becky Carlson said. “We just couldn’t buy a basket.”
The lone exception to the offensive malady for the Fillies was junior forward Addie Haar, who scored 13 points on 5 of 10 shooting. At the 2:05 mark of the fourth quarter, Haar had scored 13 of Iola’s 17 points.
The Wildcats had something to do with that.
The defending girls Class 3A state champion took control with a 14-0 run, courtesy of its devastating pressure defense, to break a 5-5 deadlock. Haar and Emma Piazza both hit a pair of free throws, pulling Iola to within 21-9 by the midway point of the second period.
The Fillies got no closer.
Burlington scored 13 unanswered to lead 34-9. The advantage reached 30 midway through the fourth quarter, triggering a running clock.
“Addie had a great game,” Carlson said.
Even with the tough defeat, Carlson saw glimmers of optimism.
“We’ve taken a step forward as a team,” she said. “Now we want to keep moving forward. We have to take that next step to get even better.”
Piazza added four points, while Emery Driskel had the final two.
Haar also led the Fillies with six rebounds, while Toni Macha had four boards. Mikeala Platt, Sydney Wade and Piazza each had two assists. Lexie Long pulled in a pair of steals.
Breanna Bluma’s 10 points led the Wildcats. Five others scored between six and nine points.
