Marcella Rose (Frederick) “Marty” Phelan departed her earthly bonds Monday morning, Oct. 31, 2016, at Diversicare in Chanute, surrounded by her loving family.
She was born June 22, 1930, at home in Woodson County, the daughter of Clara Josephine (Westerman) and Raymond Frederick. She attended rural schools and graduated valedictorian from St. Francis High School in St. Paul. in 1948. Her ambition in life then was to be a good wife, and by all accounts, she succeeded. She married James Ronald Phelan on June 2, 1948, at Owl Creek Church, Woodson County. Their union was blessed with three sons, Richard James, Michael Thomas and Patrick Eugene.
She assisted Jim with his business as bookkeeper until he retired, and after starting a family, she was employed as a U.S. Postal Clerk in Humboldt until her retirement.
Marty was a devout Catholic and member of St. Joseph’s Parish and Alter Society in Humboldt.
Marty is survived by a son, Michael, Lebanon, Ore.; five grandchildren, Christopher (wife Sherri), Daniel (wife Juanita), Keith, Jonathan and Sarah (Phelan) Waterson (husband Ryan); five great-grandchildren, Quinton, Andrew, Benjamin, Jacob and Katelyn Phelan; one stepgrandson, Gabriel; daughters-in-law, Margaret, Marilyn, Patricia and Scottie Phelan; sisters, Rita Roush, Chanute, and Velma Nordhus, Centralia; brothers, Robert and Thomas, Chanute, and Ralph Frederick, Goodman, Mo.
She was preceded in death by husband, James; sons, Richard and Patrick; brothers, Clarence and Lloyd; sisters, Ruth, Geraldine and infant, Rose Ann.
Cremation has been requested. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Humboldt. Rosary will be recited prior to Mass at 9:30 a.m. Interment will follow at St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery. Memorial established at St. Patrick’s Catholic School in Chanute. Countryside Funeral Home in Humboldt is in charge of arrangements.
