Leonard E. South, 78, of rural Iola died Sunday, Feb. 20, 2011, at his home.
He was born March 20, 1932, in Goodland, to Freeman Earl and Gladys Myrtle (Brumit) South. The family moved from Goodland to La Junta, Colo., when he was 3. He attended La Junta schools and helped his father with his trucking business.
On April 10, 1952, he married Mary F. Stephens in Clayton, N.M. He served in the U.S. Army from 1953 to 1955 and was stationed in occupied Germany. Following his honorable discharge from the service, the couple made their home in La Junta where he worked for the La Junta Police Department for three years and then drove an 18 wheeler for his father’s trucking business. In 1966, the family moved to Coffeyville where he worked as a route salesman for Pesi-Cola and where he was named salesman of the year. They moved to Humboldt a year later and he was a route salesman for Wonder Bread. He retired in 1994 from Frito-Lay. They moved from Humboldt to their home in the country in 1988.
He was a member of Humboldt United Methodist Church and enjoyed making clocks, cooking and sharing his food with others. He was known as the enchilada man.
He is survived by his wife of the home; two daughters, Cheryl Coltrane and her husband, Doug, rural Humboldt, and Carol Wagner, Independence, Mo.; a granddaughter, Megan Anderson and her husband, Todd, rural Humboldt; two great-grandchildren, Cole and Haylie Anderson; and a brother, Lee and his wife, Paula, Albuquerque, N.M.
A son, Richard Earl, grandson, Andrew Richard Coltrane, and granddaughter, Laura Kaye Coltrane, died earlier.
Cremation has taken place.
Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Humboldt United Methodist Church. The Rev. Debby Dick will officiate.
