James D. “Jim” Ellis, 81, died Monday, Jan. 31, 2011, following an extended battle with cancer.
He was born July 12, 1929, in rural Erie, the son of James Orville and Cecile Ellis. He attended school in Stark and graduated from Stark High School in 1947.
He lived and worked in the area for most of his life, retiring after 30 years with the Kansas Department of Transportation.
He was preceded in death by Pearl, his wife of almost 60 years. He was a member of First Christian Church and Masonic Lodge in Chanute.
Ellis is survived by his five children, CeCe Mitchell, Don Ellis, Karen Washburn, Janet Rollow and Darilyn Galemore; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; a brother, Wayne O., Chanute; a sister, JoAnn Stone-king, Derby; several nieces and nephews and his three “angels,” caregivers Karen, Jessica and Tammy.
He was preceded in death by one brother and one sister.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at First Christian Church in Chanute. Burial will follow at Shaw Cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 8 at Penwell-Gabel Gibson Chapel.
Memorials in his name may be made to First Christian Church, God’s Pantry or Horizon Hospice and left with the funeral home, which is in charge of arrangements.
