Iola High students to join nationwide rally

March 13, 2018 - 7:55 AM

Wednesday morning at 10 o’clock the students of Iola High School will join voices with a projected 2,500 other high schools across the country in a coordinated school walkout. The student-led protest is intended, on the one hand, to remember the 17 victims of the recent high school shooting in Florida, and, on the other, to bring urgency to the subject of safer schools.

In an effort to gain greater visibility for their gesture, the student demonstration will involve a walk around the town square. Many will carry signs in this peaceful march. After the walkout, students will return to the school to resume their normal class schedule.

Organized by SADD [Students Against Destructive Decisions], Wednesday’s act of protest is an entirely voluntary picket. Students and teachers wishing to remain in the classroom may do so. As in the majority of other school districts nationwide, the walkout has garnered the support of district administrators.
