Glenda Helton reviewed the book Growing Up at Mondays Unity Club meeting at the Iola Public Library.
Growing Up was penned by Pulitzer Prize-winning New York Times columnist Russell Baker, who wrote about growing up in the Great Depression.
Baker was born in a tiny village in the mountains of Virginia. His father, a hard-drinking stonemason, died when Baker was 5, leaving his mother with three children and no means of support. She made ends meet with the help of extended family and her skill with money.
